Proposal:
Public schools must provide a longer school day for kids under 12 years old. The additional hours can be used for a variety of enrichment activities including (but not limited to) athletics, music, art, drama, games, and technology.
Intent:
Help working parents stay at work and keep more of their money.
Discussion:
The short school day is difficult for many families. Single parents and dual-income households may not have anyone at home who can watch the kids after school and need to pay for child care programs, which can be very expensive.
It is generally considered acceptable for kids 12 and older to be at home alone, but for younger kids the parents need help. Even if there is an older sibling, that sibling may have their own after-school activities to attend.
