    Proposal:

Schools must use a 4-point system for class grades.

    Intent:

To simplify the grade point systems and replace the obsolete A,B,C,D,F system.

    Discussion:

Schools that use the A,B,C,D,F system end up converting those letter grades into points anyway. The grade letters A,B,C,D,F are not easier to use or understand than the grade points 4,3,2,1,0 and they require additional effort to deal with.

An itemized points assignment is any assignment that has more than one question or area where the student can get something more or less right, which are assigned their own point values. For example, a math assignment may have 10 questions, each worth one point. Such an assignment would be graded with the number of points earned out of 10. This is an itemized points assignment. Another example is a writing assignment to write a single paragraph about something, in which the only thing being graded is the paragraph, but there is a rubric for grading that paragraph which assigns points to various features included in the paragraph, and in that case the assignment is still considered itemized. Scores on such itemized assignments can then be converted to a 0-4 grade or the teacher may add up all those points, some of which may be weighted, at the end of the term and then convert the final grade to the 0-4 point system.
